Alabaster - Part 4: D'ni Town

Now that the eye symbol puzzle is finished, only three other puzzles remain. Two of which are going to be solved in this part: the beetle puzzle and the insect puzzle.

The beetle room
The beetle room

Troublesome Equations

Walk forward until you enter a round room. You are facing a large beetle on a pillar. Turn left and walk into the first corridor on your left. Here you will find 4 doors that appear to be closed and 3 signs with an equation. Oh no, more dubious math (like in 'Elodeas Tunnelgang'). The 3 equations are:

0 / 0 = 6
1 / 3 = 5
1 / 5 = 4

In the middle of the corridor is a large hole in the floor. Stand close to the edge and look for another insect symbol. It's a fly in a six sided hexagon shape.

The last insect clue

Now step into the hole to reach the lower floor. This room seems to be a bathroom. When facing the bath with the sun symbol, turn right and walk into the corridor. It leads to a closed gate. to your left is a key-symbol. Click it to open the gate. Follow the path until you reach a room with large pieces of rock from the ceiling. A dead man lies under the rocks. On the other side of the room is a closed gate. It leads back to the area with the wooden poles in the ground.

The bathroom
The bathroom

Head back to the bathroom. Go into the first room on your left. Not really sure what this room was used for, but there is a piece of newspaper although you cannot click on it. Go back to the bathroom and take the next corridor on your left. It leads to a well. On the other side of the well is a closed gate. Approach it and press the key symbol on your left. The gate opens. Walk into the tunnel until you reach another gate. Behind it is another journey cloth.

The fourth journey cloth
The fourth journey cloth

Press the key symbol on your right, click the book to open it and click the linking panel to end up on the other side of the gate. Walk to the 4th cloth and touch it. (Actually, this is the 3rd cloth.) If you continue following the tunnel, you will end up in the lake near the beach with the fish symbol. That's not where you want to go right now, so head back to the gate you just came from.

The hidden key
The hidden key

The gate is closed again, but there is a key symbol on your right. It may have vanished under the rock surface, but you should be able to find the clickspot to your right and close to the gate. When done, you'll be facing the well. Walk past the well and head into the corridor you came from. When you reach the bathroom, turn left and walk into the next corridor. At the spiralling staircase, turn right and walk up the stairs. It leads to a round room with two closed doors and some clothing. The first door has a button to open it, the other door does not. Open the first door and carefully walk through the door. You're back in the corridor with the hole in the floor. Walk to your left past the crack in the floor and you will be back in the beetle room. You are now on the opposite side of where you entered the beetle room. You just took the corridor to your right, so the only corridor you have not been to yet, is the one to your left

Jumping around again
Jumping around again

Enter the corridor to your left. It leads to a round room with a broken floor. Turn left and jump to the next platform. Walk towards the next corridor. Jump from the edge of the platform to reach the first of 3 equations in this room. This one reads: 4 / 2 = 3. Walk along the edge of the floor out of the corridor to the next corridor. Stay close to the wall and you won't have to jump here. The next equation reads: 3 / 4 = 2. Walk out of the corridor, towards the next corridor. Again, jump from the edge to reach the corridor. This equation reads: 2 / 5 = 1. If you look down in the hole you will see that the room below is the one with the dead man. Make a jump to reach the next platform and head towards the next corridor. This one has no equation, so continue to the corridor that you came from when you entered this room.

When you're back in the beetle room, look around a bit. There are 4 outer pillars with a large beetle on it. Then there are 4 white inner pillars and one of them has a green button attached to it. The button has the D'ni number 6 on it. In the middle of all the pillars is a glass cage with a pedestal in it.

Examining the beetle room
Examining the beetle room

You have found 6 equations that don't make any sense and that's because these are not equations. Remember that the only clue you have found so far that has beetles: the chart from the hidden office. That chart looks a bit like a genetics chart. Although it is not the same, the beetles on the chart are 4 distinctly different species, but the puzzle works in much the same way. For now, forget about the right hand side of the equations. You should be able to find the resulting beetle for five of the equations. But what about the first equation? Zero is not on the chart, so there is no beetle for that one. Now look to the right hand side of the equations. They are numbers from 1 to 6. The beetles on the outer pillars need to be pressed in a specific order and these numbers could be it. Also remember the white pillar with the green button? It has the number 6 on it. Could it be that the green button needs to be pressed the last?

Putting it all together gives you:

order found	re-ordered
---------------------------------------------------------
0 / 0 = 6	2 / 5 = 1	purple beetle
1 / 3 = 5	3 / 4 = 2	bright green beetle
1 / 5 = 4	4 / 2 = 3	black beetle
4 / 2 = 3	1 / 5 = 4	green with brown beetle
3 / 4 = 2	1 / 3 = 5	black beetle
2 / 5 = 1	0 / 0 = 6	green button with 6 on it

Pressing the backside of the beetles in that order, followed by the green button and the glass cage is being raised. Walk to the pedestal and press the beetle on it. The wall of this room starts moving and while the corridors are being covered by the wall, another corridor appears. Walk into the newly opened corridor.

Entering The D'ni Town

Follow the corridor until you reach the fountain room. Walk past the fountain to the adjacent hall. Follow the path up the stairs and continue your path into the next corridor. It leads to a room with a round device in the center. It has symbols on it like the insects in a shape you have seen so far. Some of them however, have a different shape around them. Leave the buttons for now, as you have one more clue to find. (Although you already have all the clues you need to solve this puzzle.)

The insect room
The insect room

Let's finish up a few loose ends. Turn left and take the corridor that ends with a wooden door. Walk up against the door to open it. Walk over the bridge to the other side. To your left you should see the animal clue with the poles. At the end of the bridge, turn left. Follow the path until you enter a round room with a few pedestals and statues. Turn left and walk into the narrow corridor. At the end you'll see a scope. Walk to it and look through the scope. It's the final clue to the animal shape of the poles. It's the lizard. In the middle of the animal shape was a rock with the number 2 on it. Another pair completed. You can walk on the balcony if you go left or right, but other than enjoying the view, there's nothing else to do here.

Walk back to the room with the statues. You can go to the left into another corridor leading to another room, but there's nothing to do there. Exit the building and walk back to the bridge. Walk past the bridge to the left and follow the path. Cross the next bridge. This bridge is over the other animal clue that was not clear enough yet. On the other side of the bridge you'll find a path with a variety of plants on both sides. At the end is a fence with a button. Press it to see the animal shape down below. That looks like a chameleon to me. The number that came with it was 8. Turn around and walk back to the insect-room.

A much better view

When you reach the insect-room, turn left and follow the next corridor. At the end, walk down the stairs and head into the corridor right in front of you. Walk up against the door at the end to open it. Walk into the next room. It has a few books lying around and a lot of pictures, drawings and paintings of beetles and butterflies. Next to the desk is another corridor. Walk into the corridor and follow it to the end. You'll enter a room with a lot of empty bookshelves, a few books lying around and a pedestal with a fish. The sign reads "Fish". (I suppose I would never have guessed that myself...) On the back side of the pedestal is another sign that reads: "Push". Push it and a secret door opens. Walk into the secret room to find the last insect clue on the wall.

The last insect clue
The last insect clue

The clue on the wall shows the buttons in the insect room. A red line shows which buttons to push and some of the buttons have an insect close to them. It will however, not tell you in which direction to follow the red line. The clues you encountered along the way, can only tell you which geometric shape they should have. They cannot tell you in which order they should be used, as there are many ways to travel through this Age. The only clue that tells you exactly in which order these insect symbols should be used is the one from the village in the weavery.

Step back from the clue on the wall and enter the corridor that has been revealed after the secret door closed again. You can go left or right here. Go right first. Walk up the stairs. In the first room are only some crates. Continue walking up the stairs. At the end, go through the first door on your right. You are now on a platform overlooking the lake and beach. In the corner is a scope aimed at the railing from the railing puzzle. To the left of the scope is a torn banner containing the first part of the solution for the railing puzzle.

Nothing else to do here, so turn around and walk back to the door. Enter the round structure and enter the corridor to your right. The next room seems to be a research facility. There is a lot of stuff, but nothing you can do here.

Research facility
Research facility

Turn around and walk back through the corridor and take the stairs back down. When you reach the corridor to the hidden room and the fish pedestal, walk past it and continue walking clockwise. It leads to a corridor on your left and a stairs going down straight ahead. Take the stairs down first. After a while, the path is blocked by some wooden planks and rocks. On the rock in the middle lies what looks like a book or journal. You can jump over it, but you cannot reach it. Head back up the stairs until you reach the first corridor on your right. Enter the corridor and follow it until you reach the end. On the wall on the right is a button. Push it to open the door. Go through the opening and enter the room. It seems to be some sort of study.

I need to rest... But wait, the chair is not solid!

There is a glass door leading to a balcony. Walk up against the door to open it. The balcony offers a nice view over the lake and beach. You can also see the merchant's stores from here. Turn right and walk over the balcony around the building you just came from. Around the corner, to your left is the entrance to a garden. You'll get there soon, but leave it for now. A little further, to your right is the entrance to the classroom. Enter the classroom. You'll find an important clue to another puzzle on the blackboard. That puzzle is not in this area, so take a note or picture and leave the classroom.

A clue to a new puzzle

On the other side is a large entrance to a building, it has what looks like an egyptian style arch. Walk through the arch and enter the building. In the hall with white pillars, you can go straight, left or right. If you go straight, you will be in the opera. If you go left or right you can get onto one of the balconies. Nothing to do there, but feel free to look around. Go straight and walk down the stairs. On the right side of the podium is a staircase. Walk onto the podium and find a spot where you can walk through the curtains. It's a little to the left. Behind the curtains you will find a large backdrop, crates and clothes. Behind the crates is a corridor. It's blocked by the crates but you can jump onto the crates to reach the corridor. The crate with the blue clothes in it is the easiest to jump onto. From there, jump to the crates next to it before you try to enter the corridor. Follow the corridor until you reach a small garden.

A small garden
A small garden

To your left is a water pump and a little further away a bench. Walk to the bench and go sit on it. From there, you will be able to see the map of this Age on the wall. On the map, the journey cloths are indicated by a red x. You have found four journey cloths thus far and the only three remaining cloths are on the two islands in the lake. That pretty much tells you where to go next, after this area is completed.

Finally, a map
Finally, a map

When facing the map, to your left is a water pump with a red hose attached to it. Switch to first person view (F1), if you haven't already and follow the red hose through the bushes. You are now in the larger garden you saw earlier from the cliff.

In the far left corner is the stairs to get back up on the cliff. Walk up the stairs and turn towards the classroom. Walk past the classroom towards the large entrance with the red-yellow roof on it. Walk through the passage and at the end, take the stairs to the left and go back to the insect room.

Solving The Insect Puzzle

Now that you have found all insect clues, it is time to solve the insect puzzle. As I've stated before, the only clue you really need is the banner from the village. It shows the correct insect and shape combination as well as the correct sequence. If you numbered the insects from top to bottom with one to five, then you can push the corresponding buttons like: 12345, but also: 45123 or 23451. The last clue in the hidden room also tells you where the buttons are located, but there is no time constraint, so you can take your time finding the correct next button.

Insects and shapes

If you've followed the sequence from the banner then you will see the round door opening through the glass window. Walk into the corridor where the door openened and go through the door. You may have to jump to get past the doorstep.

The eleventh animal clue
The eleventh animal clue

You are now on a balcony overlooking a large painting of a mammoth on the rock wall. This is the eleventh animal clue. Turn around and look at the door for the D'ni number that comes with the mammoth: eleven. Next to the door is a Myst island marker switch. It seems to be broken.

What is that marker switch doing here anyway?
What is that marker switch doing here anyway?

Turn around again and look up. You should see a torn piece of a banner on the balustrade, left from where you looked at the mammoth. It's the second half of the railing puzzle clue. You can reach the banner if you climb the wall to the left, where the small bushes are.

Climbing up
Climbing up

Walk up the sloped rocks towards the red-yellow building. You can go right first, to see the torn banner on the balustrade, or continue straight towards the red-yellow building. It's actually the roof of the passage that you've walked through before. Halfway is a gap in the path, so stay left to pass it.

Red-yellow roof
Red-yellow roof

Although you can walk around the roof and see it from the other side, there's not much to see. Instead, jump through the left window inside the red-yellow roof-structure. Once you're inside, turn left and walk towards the ladder going down. Climb down the ladder and jump off the bushes at the end. To your left is the stairs to the insect room. Take the stairs and follow the corridor until you reach the insect room.

Walk around the buttons in the middle of the room and go into the corridor opposite to the one you came from. You've done all you can do here, so it is time to return to the lake. Follow the corridors back to the fountain room and from there back to the beetle room. The beetle room is closed but the button to your right will rotate the wall and open the door. Enter the beetle room and wait for the wall to rotate back to it's original position.

When the wall is back to it's original position, enter the corridor opposite to where you came from. It's the corridor with a gate in the middle. Walk to the gate and press the key to your right. Click to open the linking book then click the linking panel.

Walk through the corridor until you reach the rock wall door. Walk up against the door to open it. Walk forward, turn left and press the button around the corner. The wooden door opens, so walk through it and follow the tunnel to the end. At the exit, turn right and follow the path until you reach a fork. At the fork turn left and follow the path until the exit of this passage. Walk towards the passage with the large horns to reach the beach. Walk to the end of the beach to get to the shore.
