Elodeas Tunnelgang - Part 1: Underneath The City

Available in: Deep Island Shard,
UAM Shard (older version)

This Age is the third episode of Elodea. All episodes of Elodea are actually located in the same Age as the first episode: Elodea. For reasons of performance the Age was split up into four seperate Ages, all situated on or underneath the island of Elodea.

In the previous episode you found a hidden door leading into a maze underneath the hospital. All the doors were closed except one leading into a maintenance area underneath the city. Walk through the door past the pedestal with the linking book. Follow the corridor until you find another pedestal with a book containing a few words from the creator of this Age. Continue walking through the corridor until you see a passageway partially blocked by wooden planks. Step through the wooden barricade and walk toward the round stairway leading downward. Walk down the stairs. At the end you will see a dooropening with a note on the wall next to it. This is a similar note as in the first room of the previous episodes, telling about the special cloth that will link you close to the last saved journey cloth position. That cloth is in the next room past the corridor you are standing by now.

The next room has the special cloth taped to the wall. No use touching it now as you have not yet found any of the journey cloths. This room has a closed door on your left and a ladder going down on the left side of the railing. Going down the ladder will bring you to an area with two closed doors and a closed metal gate, none of which can be opened at this time. So walk towards the door on your left. The lever to open the door is next to the door, so pull the lever. These levers can be a bit tricky as the clickspot is sometimes difficult to find.

So Many Buttons And Only 5 Are Needed...

Enter the next room. I will refer to this room as room 1. It has a device with two weels and a button on it and a closed door on your left and right side. Walk to the door on your left hand side. Pull the lever next to it to open the door. Enter the next room. On your left is another device with two weels and a button, on your right are two other devices and in front of you is a device that I will refer to as the clue-device.

To the left of the clue-device is a lever. (Just around the corner.) Pull the lever to open a large hatch that was covering the actual clue-device. The clue device consists of five wheels with markings on them. In front of the five wheels are a series of buttons. Pressing these buttons will turn one wheel at a time. Each wheel has three markings on it: a red square, a d'ni letter and a narayan symbol. Press the buttons to make each wheel turn and make a note of which d'ni letter is associated with which narayan symbol.

Translating The Symbols

Leave the room with the clue-device and pull the lever next to the door on the opposite side of room 1. Walk through the corridor until you reach the next room. As with room 1, I will refer to this room as room 2. It has a few workbenches and a chalkboard. Written on the chalkboard are some d'ni letters and their corresponding letter in the modern western alphabet. Use the chalkboard to match each d'ni letter with its corresponding letter from the western alphabet. It should give you the following letters: X, I, E, L and E. This means that the letter E has two narayan equivalents.

Room 2

To the left of the chalkboard is another dooropening leading to another room. In this room stands a workbench and a large device with six buttons on it. Five of these buttons are labeled with the same narayan symbols that were also on the clue-device. It seems rather obvious that the buttons need to be pressed in a certain order. But in what order? The clue to that question lies on the workbench to the left of the large device. Did you see that rolled-up poster? It's from the cover of the third myst game in which Saveedro took Atrus's Releeshan book. The clue-device gave you the letters X, I, E, L and E. Shuffle those letters to form the name of the third myst game: Exile. The correct order in which to push the buttons on the large device with the narayan symbols is: 1 5 3 2 4. The sixth button (the one without a narayan symbol) is not used. After pressing the correct sequence you will hear a sound coming from another room.

Another strange device

Leave the room and walk through the doorway on the opposite side of room 2. Follow the corridor until you come at another closed door with a lever next to it. Pull the lever and the door will open. Walk forward and walk down the ladder to a small area with a closed door and a lever that used to be behind a metal gate. So the large device with the narayan symbols on the buttons was to open this gate. Now that the gate is open, pull the lever and the other door will open. Walk away from the lever before the metal gate closes again and walk through the door that has just opened.

To the left is a dead end filled with some barrels, so go to the right. Follow the corridor clockwise and keep turning right until you come at another dead end filled with barrels. Make your way past the barrels until you find the first journey cloth. Touch it and walk back to the opening where you can enter another corridor.

Another Room With Clues

Walk through the opening and turn left, walk all the way through the corridor until you see a half opened door with a wooden cart and a tunnel on the right. Walk into the room first. On your left you will see a birdcage and on the wall a large key underneath a compass rose. That means the compass rose is either a clue or a preview of what is to come. Note that the outer circle of the compass rose is devided into 36 sections, each devided into 10 subsections, thus making a total of 360 (degrees). Not sure if that means that at some point you will have to translate a compass direction into degrees of a circle. Turn around and walk towards the table in the middle of the room. On the table you will find a journal that you can read.

After reading the journal leave the room through the opening with curtains. Behind the curtains is another clue: a list of all the narayan symbols and their meaning. Notice that some of the words start with a blackened letter. You may want to take a picture of this list.

Turn left and walk up the stairs. At the end of the stairs is another room with two beds in the corner, some paintings on the wall, dressers, wardrobes, closets a table and a few chairs. On one of the dressers lies a book containing pictures from the various myst games.

Nothing else to do here, so head back out of the room and walk back to the first room with the compass rose. Leave that room too and walk towards the wooden cart. A stone tablet lies in the cart with a symbol on it. It has the appearance of being a clue, but it is not. Head for the opening past the cart, leading into a tunnel.

Once you're there, look around. You should see a small cage on the ground with a piece of cheese in it. Closeby the cage lies a small device attached to a piece of rope. The rope leads to one of the grills on the wall. It looks like the people who resided here were trying to catch the mice or rats (for food?). Not sure where they got the cheese from though...

Tunnels, Gates & Lava Canals

Continue walking through the tunnel until you reach the end. On your right you see a metal chest but it won't open. In front of you is a canal filled with lava. A little to the left you should see circle shaped things continuously rising from the lava and disappearing again. Bubbles or Lava-flappers? Oh boy, I'd better not start about the biological impossibility of that last option. They are also very shy: they won't show up on ki-images, but they do on screenshots.

Lava canals
Lava canals

Turn left and walk along the canal. Turn left at the first corner and continue walking until you reach a pair of wooden pallets. There is a wooden plank here that you can use to cross the canal to the other side. Because there is nowhere to go on the other side of the canal at this time, ignore the plank and continue walking on the left side of the canal. Turn right at the next corner and walk towards an area with green leaves on the wall.

A rest area?
A rest area?

There are some wooden beams on the left and some vases a little bit futher. Continue walking past a few wooden benches and baskets. When you've reached the canal with lava, turn right and walk until you come at a metal gate. On the right side of the gate is a button that will open the gate. Push it and walk through the gate. In the middle of this area are wooden crates with pottery. Behind the crates is a ladder leading to another storage area above where you are now. Walk around the ladder and climb up. You are now in an area with some barrels, wheels, pallets and an imager. Nothing can be done with any of those so walk in the other direction towards the open gate. Walk through it to end up in another tunnel with gates on each side of the tunnel. Turn right first. You should see an open door. Walk through it. This seems to be yet another storage area filled with barrels, crates and sacks. Makes you wonder why they would bother trying to catch mice or rats near where they resided...

Plenty of supplies
Plenty of supplies

There's nothing to do in this storage area, so head back through the door, turn left and walk through the tunnel to the far end, past the gate where you entered this tunnel.

Tunnels and gates, as far as the eye can see...

At the end of the tunnel are two open gates. Ignore the one on your right for now and head to the gate at the end. Walk through it and turn right. Walk through the open gate you see in front of you and stay on the left side of this room. Walk along the large hole in the ground with a metal beam sticking out. Near the end of this room is another stone tablet with markings on it.

Now, Where Are The DRC Cones?

Walk into the hole with the metal beam sticking out. You will fall down into one of the rooms near the lava canal. This one is filled with debris. On one side, where the gate is, you'll find a chest and some tools. There's also a bucket that you can kick around. On the other side of this room is a wall with a journey cloth.

Tucked away behind debris
Tucked away behind debris

Walk toward the metal beam first. Jump onto the metal beam and walk up the beam until your head is blocked by the ceiling. Now step off the beam on the left side and walk towards the second journey cloth. Touch it. Now turn around and make a few jumps to get past the debris. Walk towards the gate on the front side of the room. Turn around when you have reached the pool of water and jump onto the metal beam leading to the upper floor where you came from. Walk over the beam until you reach the end of the beam. Turn to the right and make a standing jump onto the beam leading further up. Walk over the beam until you're back at the upper floor
