Laki'anay - Part 4: Giloto & Cholanay

Giloto is quite different from the other two Ages. For starters, it is daytime here and there's no blue fog. The entire area is covered with rock. Between the domes is a canal leading to a beach. Although you can hear all sorts of bugs all around you, there are no bushes for them to hide themselves in. Oh, well...

Greenhouses

Behind you is a building with only one door. It's closed and has a keypad next to it. The symbols on the keypad match the symbols from the 12 islands in Argosy. However, you still need to find the other piece of the captain's map. Turn around and walk towards the stairs going down to the domes. Walk down the stairs. Most domes are closed, so you cannot enter them. Only two domes are open so you can enter those. Walk to the bridge over the canal and cross the bridge. The dome on the left is open, but there's not much to see inside. With the bridge behind you, turn right and walk to the windmill past the second dome. Although you can climb up in the windmill and pull a lever to unlock it, the windmill does not seem to do anything noticable.

At the end of the canal is a bridge and a waterfall. You can walk over the bridge. In the middle of the bridge is a wheel, but it cannot be used. Walk towards the stairs going down to the beach, or simply walk down the slope to reach the beach. Behind the dome is a large shed or boathouse and a sunken ship. There seems to be a door on the left side of the shed. Walk towards it. As soon as you get closer you'll also notice a piece of paper attached to the right side of the entrance to the shed. It's the missing piece of the captain's map.

Now that you have found the torn piece of the captain's map, it's time to unlock the door of the building up on the hills, near the link-in point. There's nothing else to do here, you can walk around the shed but none of the doors will open. Return to the starting point and walk to the door with the keypad.

The two pieces of the captain's map can be combined into one now. The symbols can also be added now. The following picture shows the entire map with the symbols added clockwise:

Map with symbols

Although there were 12 islands and symbols in Argosy, the keypad only uses 9 of them. For that reason, I left out the symbols that are not on the keypad. The symbols represent the 12 islands and each island has a D'ni number associated with it. Logic dictates that you'll need to push the symbols on the keypad in the order indicated by the D'ni numbers. That would give you the following sequence:

7 8 1
4 5 6
2 3 9

However, that sequence will not work. I also made a map with the symbols added counterclockwise but the resulting sequence also doesn't work. Bad puzzle design? It certainly looks like that is the case here. As much as I admire the Ages Laki'anay and Argosy, the puzzles are terrible. Turning on the generator in Laki'anay was pretty much an exercise in trial and error until you pulled the correct lever or switch. This one is the same. With 9 keys on the keypad, you have 81 possible combinations. And as the clues are meaningless and actually misleading (in the sense that they suggest to be clues while they are not), you are left trying all 81 possible combinations until you find the one that does work. (Simply adding a journal entry containing a list of failed attempts / combinations would have turned it into a genuine Myst puzzle though.)

The following sequence will work:

4 9 5
3 6 8
1 2 7

When you have entered the above sequence, step back from the keypad and walk through the door as quickly as you can. The door will close again after only a few seconds. Inside is a room with two doorways (that is not counting the outer door). Go through the left doorway.

The central hall

You are now in a central hall with five other rooms and a ladder in the middle. There's no way to reach the ladder from here, but you can enter all five rooms. One room has a wooden door, the other rooms have no door. Go into the second room on your left. (It's the room left from the one with a wooden door.) You'll find an overturned table and one of the smaller rooms has a D'ni number five on the wall. The D'ni number five doesn't seem to be a clue though.

Exit the room and walk to the next room on your left. (The room with a wooden door.) Press the button to open the door and enter the room. There are a few crates here but nothing you can do with them. The smaller room on your left has a few more crates. You can jump onto the crates on the left side. From there, you should be able to see an opened hatch in the floor behind the crates. Walk to the hatch and climb down the ladder.

The ladder leads to a small room with a corridor, a door and a red button. The corridor leads to another door that cannot be opened. Instead, press the red button to see that while the door closes, a tunnel is being revealed.

Crawl into the tunnel and walk towards the exit at the other end. Crawl out of the tunnel and climb the ladder. This is the ladder you saw ealier in the central hall. The ladder leads to a lookout post on top of the building. Walk to the pedestal with a linking book. Click the book to zoom in and touch the linking panel to link back to the ship in Argosy. This time, you're not linked to the upper deck but into the ship's brig...

Turn around and walk to the pedestal with a book on it. Click the book to zoom in and click again to open the book. Read the few lines of text beneath the linking panel, then touch the linking panel to link back to Giloto.

You arrive inside the shed or boathouse in Giloto. Other than a few crates and wooden pallets, it's mostly empty. On one side of the shed is an elevator. The elevator buttons work exactly like the ones in Teledahn: blue is up, yellow is down. Step onto the elevator and press the yellow button.

Caverns

The elevator descends into a cavern underneath the shed or boathouse. The linking book spoke of a hidden chamber (a small cavern actually). It has two entrances and both are up against the ceiling of the cavern. If you are standing on the elevator (in the center) and looking towards the two poles with the blue and yellow buttons, then the poles are at 12 o'clock. One of the entrances is between 7 and 8 o'clock. If you consider the two poles with blue and yellow light to be north, then the direction to go is south-west. (The other entrance is at 10 o'clock or west-northwest.)

If you go in the south-west direction, you can walk towards one of the lights that are attached to the rocks in a few places. From there you should walk up against the rocks until you hit the ceiling. Look for a narrow passage.

when you arrive in the hidden cavern, stay on the left side and like before: climb up against the rocks until you hit the ceiling. There, up on a ledge you will find a pedestal with another linking book. This one will link you to Cholanay, the last of the Ages that are linked to Laki'anay.

Cholanay

Click on the book on the pedestal to zoom in and touch the linking panel to link to Cholanay. Do not expect too much here though, Cholanay really is nothing more but a small room with two pedestals with a credits kind of journal. When you link in, you see a closed gate with a linking book behind it. The gate cannot be opened. One of the pillars has a button but it cannot be clicked. Above you is a ladder, but it is out of reach. The brown book on the right pedestal tells you that in time, a new pathway will be revealed. It certainly looks like something more was planned here. Let's hope that in time it will be completed...
