Elodeas Tunnelgang - Part 3: Arithmetic Exercise

In the previous part you mastered the art of Advanced URu Acrobatics. Not only did you have to jump over numerous large beams, barrels and debris, your skills were also tested in hopping from rock to rock above an ocean of lava. Now that most of the jumping is done here, it's time to put your brains to the test with an arithmetic exercise.

Any idea how hot it is in here?
Any idea how hot it is in here?

After climbing down the ladder from the upper level, you will be facing the lava. Turn left and step onto the arch until you're on its highest point, just before the math stone. While standing just in front of the math stone and facing the chest, turn around and jump over to the ledge past the ladder. Walk forward along the lava canal. There is some pottery along the way and a plank on the left side. Ignore the plank and continue walking along the lava canal. When you reach the junction (it's just like on the upper level), follow the canal to the right. At the end you see a wooden door on your right and a math stone on the wall on your left. This math stone reads: 6 - 5 = 4.

Turn around and walk over the plank you see on your right. When you've crossed the lava canal, turn left and walk along the canal. Turn around the corner to the right. You are now facing a closed gate with a journey cloth behind it. On the other side of the room is an open gate but it is unclear at this time how to get over there. Don't bother searching the whole place to find a way to get there. This cloth and the open gate behind it are a deception. The cloth is fake and there is no way to get over there. Instead, turn around and follow the path further along the canals. Turn around the next corner on your right. You should see another plank over the canal on your left. Ignore it and continue walking along the canal until you reach a fork. To your right you should see another math stone. This one has a piece missing. It reads: 8 - 4 = . There's no way of knowing what the last number used to be at this time.

Doing the math

Now that you have found all six math stones, you are ready to begin solving the last puzzle. It is close to where you are now. Walk back to the math stone by the closed wooden door. (The math stone there reads: 6 - 5 = 4.) If you are standing on the side where the door is and facing the math stone, look to the right in the corner. You should be able to find a hidden button on a rock against the wall.

They should rename 'Elodea' to 'Button Quest'
They should rename 'Elodea' to 'Button Quest'

Press the button and you will hear a door opening. Turn around, walk past the door and enter the corridor behind the door. Follow the corridor until you reach a closed door with six stone pillars before it. The pillars have d'ni numbers on them. The ones on the right are numbered 1 to 3 and the pillars on the left are numbered 4 to 6. The six math stones contained the following calculations:

3 + 2 = 6
9 - 6 = 2
4 + 2 = 1
1 + 1 = 5
6 - 5 = 4
8 - 4 = .
Six pillars
Six pillars

Each calculation seems to give an incorrect result ranging from 1 to 6, the result that's missing could be the missing number 3. Even if that would tell us what number to push (it doesn't), it still wouldn't tell us in what order to push them. The Age is made in a non-linear way, meaning that there are many different routes possible in how you travel through the Age. It would be illogical to assume that the math stones would have been found in the correct order. What if the results from the calculations are not the numbers to push but the order in which they should be pushed? In that case, the numbers to push could be determined by calculating the real results, in other words: the results that the calculations should have given.

original order: ordered by result: real results:
(as they were found) (missing 3 added) (numbers to push)

3 + 2 = 6 4 + 2 = 1 6
9 - 6 = 2 9 - 6 = 2 3
4 + 2 = 1 8 - 4 = 3 4
1 + 1 = 5 6 - 5 = 4 1
6 - 5 = 4 1 + 1 = 5 2
8 - 4 = . 3 + 2 = 6 5

In this case, this is the correct solution. Following the same logic, it could also have been the other way around, meaning that the results given on the stones could have been the numbers to push and the real results the order in which to push them.

Translating the numbers back to d'ni numbers gives the following sequence:

Pillar solution

Push the numbers on the pillars in the given order and the door will open. Walk through the door. You are in a round room with a ladder in the middle and another door left from where you came in. Walk to the other side of the room first. There you will find the last of the seven journey cloths.

The seventh journey cloth

Touch the journey cloth and walk to the second green door. There are no hidden buttons this time. This door will open when you click on the handle in the middle of the door. When the door opens enter the corridor behind it. Follow the corridor until the end. The two doors that you will pass by cannot be opened as far as I know, so ignore them. You should see a music player in the left corner at the end of the corridor. Clicking on the music player will open a secret door back to the corridor with the 6 pillars. Not sure why you would even want to go back there as you would have to push the pillars in sequence again to enter the round room again. Well, maybe if you wanted to go back to the lava canals, but that's not the case here.

Turn around and walk back to the door leading to the round room. Press the handle in the middle of the door to open it. Walk into the round room again. Turn a little bit to the right and walk counter-clockwise around the middle structure. On one of the pillars you will find a button with the owl relief on it. Push it and the thick bars surrounding the ladder start rotating.

Walk back to the green door and turn around. As soon as the way to the ladder is clear, climb the ladder. You are now in another round room above the previous one. In this room you will find a nexus book and three linking books to the other episodes of Elodea. On the floor is a compass rose and 12 pillars surrounding the hole with the ladder. Is this what the clue found in one of the tunnels refered to? If that is true then what does the R stand for? The R was not indicated on the compass rose in the compass room near the mouse trap. It could also be another deception. And guess what, it is another deception! Just push the pillars that correspond with N, E, W, E and S on the floor. After you've done that, a window will open, revealing another room. As far as I know that room cannot be accessed, it is for viewing only.

This concludes the walkthrough for this episode of Elodea: 'Elodeas Tunnelgang'. There's nothing more to do here other than using the third linking book to the next and last episode of Elodea: 'Elodeas Schatzkammern'.
